Event Review One

Loganholme FC Lightning metro one all but thundered in their opening football match against Narangba United losing 5-4 at their home ground in Cornubia on Tuesday night.

At a packed house the club and balcony shuddered as supporters flocked to see their number one side start their campaign for the 2009 premiership.

The crowds soon fell silent as Narangba proceeded to snatch three quick goals in the first half against the run of play leaving coach Joe Borg shaking his head.

“Conceding early goals like that was the worst we could expect, from then on we were chasing a shadow trying to put together miracle balls and that’s not what we needed, we needed to slow it down and play our game and show patience,” he said.

Caught out of balance and out of time the Loganholme goal keeper was left stranded in the tenth minute off a corner that found the feet of a Narangba opponent on the eighteen yard box, sending it into the bottom left corner.

Looking to hit back early Loganholme dominated play putting together some magic football dazzling Narangba into searching for the ball.

With each opportunity that came it was another one missed as Loganholme looked to the heavens for some sort of divine intervention.

Narangba United only needed eight minutes from their last goal to crack the wall of defence and score from the near corner as the Narangba defender climbed over to reach the high ball.

Loganholme left Defender Dustin Steele described it as scrappy and inconsistent football that only in parts looked remotely promising.

“We should of dominated tonight’s game, we penetrated wide and broke apart their defence countless times but our finishing touch and defence was something left to be desired,” he said.

Loganholme central Midfielder Stefan Bowett opened up the game in the 33rd minute with an inspiring goal from 24 yards out into the top right hand net, catching the Narangba keeper off his line and alone.

Though this did little to stop the floodgates from opening as a break down the right flank by the Narangba striker saw the defence falling over each other leaving the keeper stranded as the third goal was conceded.

With little changes made at half time Loganholme again looked promising scoring early, revitalising some confidence into the squad.

But once again it was a run down the right flank by Narangba that broke the home side, unable to stop a blistering volley into the bottom corner.

Manager of the Loganholme metro one team Benjamin Head said it was a disappointing performance by the team which needed to put together consistent football which has not been seen from the side yet.

“We’ve been training hard on constantly shifting the ball around and keeping possession, but its hard when u have had early defensive errors, you start to play panicked football,” he said.

Late goals by both sides kept the dying moments alive for a hopeful Loganholme side, but were always chasing a losing margin.

Putting the game behind them, Loganholme FC now look to next weeks match against University of Queensland to find the form needed if they are going to be contenders for the 2009 premiership.
